Those gifts; gold, frankincense and myrrh, were timely and telling. All were valuable and rare, traditionally given to royalty, but practical as well. Gold was useful during the flight to Egypt, frankincense was an ingredient in the consecrated incense used at the Temple as well as a medicine. Myrrh was used to anoint kings and to help heal wounds. Both spices were used at burial. Those gifts while immediately useful, also signified Jesus’ royal status, as well as foreshadowing His sacrificial death.
